  1. fabricate players roster boards?

Got a call for two 4' wide x 10' tall signs for girls and boys basketball roster names. Customer doesn't really want standard plastic tracking but did show me a picture of a completed sign that says it uses the "Quick Strip" system for changing names. I couldn't get too much detail from the...
  2. reflective yellow and red for fire dept. pickup

Need to quote a new pickup for our fire department. They are wanting the tailgate done in the highly reflective yellow and red stripes. Is there a ready made package for this or do I need to do the two colors and layout the angles by hand ? I assume 45 degrees. I've never installed or had to...
  3. Oracal cobalt blue to PMS match?

I'm getting a pan face painted. Face will be blue with white lettering. I would like to get as close a match to Oracal's cobalt blue vinyl as I can (#065). What PMS color can I tell the vendor to match as close as possible to get this color? Thanks is advance.
  4. Match for FDC ultra metallic?

Been using FDC ultra metallic series 3700 vinyl for just one major customer (#007 silver). Customer insists on the metal flake look on his trucks. My vendor is no longer going to carry it. Is there a match in Oracal or Avery or other major brand of a vinyl that is close? Oracal has a premium...
  5. chrome looking football helmets

Well, I started watching some bowls games during the last view days. Was watching one game (can't even remember who it was) but noticed the extremely shiny chrome looking helmets. I've noticed a few teams that wear them. My question is are they wrapped or come from the manufacturer like that...
  6. SignCraft magazine is letting me down

Got my Jan / Feb issue of SignCraft yesterday. Of course all work came to a halt as I looked at it. It gets me that the first half of the issue, really any issue of the magazine deals with sign guys (Behounek / Antonelli, etc) that write great articles about color, layout, readability, not...
  7. flexi 8 and roland gx-24 on usb port

Helping a friend of mine who is trying to get flexi 8.1 to work with a roland gx-24 cutter. In flexi's setup menu for the plotter the usb port is not listed as an option, it lists com 1 -4 and some lpt ports along with some other options, but nothing about a usb port. Any ideas or solutions...
  8. big job I just finished

Just finished two of these heaters at an asphalt refinery down in Savannah, Ga. Total size of the lettering was 22' x 8'. All painted from a lift, no vinyl used. Used pounced patterns and latex paint. Felt good to do this, very satisfying. Not counting the layout, actual painting time was...
  9. If this was happening to any other software.................

Just a thought before you put all your eggs in Adobe's cloud basket. I swear, if this was any other software we would stop using it immediately. Plus, on top of that, paying a monthly fee to where you never truly own the software. I think I'll just stick to my program cd's and manage my own...
  10. Admit it, you know you've used it!!!!

World's most hated font, you know you've used it....... http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/08/29/vincent-connare_n_3837441.html
  11. how did 18" z 24" become a standard sign size?

Question says it all. Why isn't 16" x 24" a standard sign blank size? And for that matter a 24" x 32"? If you're selling a batch of signs there would be no waste at all out of a 4 x 8 with the smaller sizes and basically the customer wouldn't know the difference unless you told them. Just one...
  12. what do you think of this??

How do you feel about never owning your software? Even with updates I may have second thoughts. Between this and reading about a 3d printer making a plastic gun that can really shoot, I think I'll go lay down and take a nap...
  13. Source for floor graphics?

Can anyone lead me in the right direction on a source for digitally printed floor graphics? Won't have to last more that 4 or 5 months. Thanks in advance.
  14. problem with cutting master since loading flexisign

I'm helping a local sign guy who has hired me to do some designing for him to ease his work load. He has CorelDraw x6 and is cutting to a Graphtec plotter thru a usb cable using a Cutting master 2 plug in. He has installed flexi 8 for me on this same computer since this is what I'm used to...
  15. Repainting the Hollywood sign

Time lapse video of repainting the letters on the Hollywood sign. Never realized how big those letters were. http://framework.latimes.com/2012/12/06/behind-the-lens-time-lapse-shoot-of-the-hollywood-sign-repainting/
  16. something for the folks in Dixie

I realize that 80% of you won't be able to relate to this. Had to paint a monument sign at a shopping center yesterday, I used alkyd enamel. After a couple of hours I had dozens of "love bugs" stuck to the paint. This is something that I have only seen in the last few years. We used to...
  17. And we're ashamed to charge $50.00 for a design

Check out the prices ad agencies charged for these famous logos, especially BP's. I would have done BP's for half that price!! Just shows you that some clients don't have to have a picture of a tree, or a electrical plug, or a dripping faucet to be a part of their logo (Nike anyone?) It's...
  18. best way to handle this

I have to do a lighted sign, 2' x 12' single faced. The face needs to be a digital print of the business name. I have done all kinds of signs but this will be my first full digital print with a black background on a lighted face. I'm thinking of using clear lexan and get the print done...
  19. and you fuss about weeding 1/2" letters!!!

Check this out. He says he started doing small so people couldn't criticize his work!! Cool stuff. And he doesn't charge by the square foot!!!!!!!!!!!!! http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/07/31/willard-wigans-microscopic-art_n_1724252.html?utm_hp_ref=weird-news#slide=1308175
  20. too good to be true?

Got fed up with DirecTV this week, paying almost $100 bucks a month and have to go through this losing channels every few months, or at least the threat of losing channels. Also losing the signal in bad weather, etc. So I cancelled the service and am looking at other options. Main thing I...
