Very shocked and saddened by the news.
I had sent him a PM last month about his new avie (we would occasionally PM) and he had a cute little reply:
I am sure that being a biker, he would have chosen this type of exit, just not as soon. Rest in peace, Dave.

Is it me or do the car shadow and the drop shadow on the lettering have two different light sources?
I'm with Weasel, what does it look like without that bright red?
Either way, it's light years ahead of anything I could do and it looks cool.

I think RJ had a great take on it. Yours seems to have too much background and not enough Ample. The slant seems off between the shape and the lettering. When working with angles I have learned to try and make each element have the same skewing.

I hate doing this stuff as well, and typically just buy a kit from Restyler's Choice (I don't let them choose or it adds even more time) and triple that plus install. Either they want it or they don't.
I usually ask if they want real painted graphics. Now some of those can be fun, and for real...
I would just hand it to him and while doing so tell him that there is no charge.
I had to personalize a tiny urn for a little dead chihuahua's ashes, took me 5 minutes to hand-letter and there was no way I could charge for that.

The "eyes" you are using give off an alarmed/comical or menacing impression.
Move the pupils around to get a better expression for starters.

They are illegal in my township.
A biz down the street got a dandy one (but not a permit) Took them MONTHS to get it approved, and it can only change every two minutes.
The next township up has a rash of these monstrosities.
Too bright, illegible crap flashing away.

Try using American Sans for all the copy except for finish, and lose the gloss effect, it makes it really hard to read.
I'd also lose the slant. It throws the balance out of whack.
I would not use black lettering on the orangey red shield.

Most definitely not.
After 27 years, my industry is dead. I started out as a painter and I did expand into computer-aided sign making.
But none of that matters.
If you can afford used machines on eBay or Craigslist, you too can become a sign maker, regardless of your skills or the lack thereof...
I agree that it's reallllly hard to read (especially on the sides)
Notice how much more contrast the white phone number has on the back.
I have no idea why Sign*A*Rama uses that color scheme.
I would try to avoid the red on blue as much as possible.

You're still headed in the wrong direction.
It's not "cute" or clever to use the S for both words.
Reads IGN HOP to me, glad you didn't add a HIT in there too.
It's still hard to read.
Outlining everything is impairing your contrast.
Try using DECALS rather than stickers.
