  1. Roland VersaCAMM Vsi 54" VERSUS Mimaki CJV150-130 PRINTER/CUTTER

Once again I will give my sage advice regarding major purchases. If you can buy a printer from the dealer that is just down the street do it. Even if it costs $1000 more, do it. Like Ponto said printers break at worst possible time. When your printer is down and you have angry clients what...
  2. Slick surface for cable guides

If the cables are wavy you need to check your installation. I fought with mine to get just the right radius and eliminate waves. If I ever do it again I'm going to lay the cables flat under my cutting mat for a couple days.
  3. Clear coat on brass

Need more details. If it is engraved brass you're trying to protect send it out for clear powder coat.
  4. Laminator recommendations?

THIS^^^^^ "What laminator should I buy"? should be a sticky. Very surprised it isn't.
  5. Pool graphics? Is this doable?

Interesting. I'd think at bare minimum you'd want to seal the graphic edges with some type of urethane. Better bet may be to coat it completely with automotive urethane. Some epoxies have a tendency to yellow when exposed to UV. A friend of mine actually paints the bottoms of pools. If...
  6. Roland SP540V cutting problems

You may want to try a search and look at my posts as I have the exact same machine. Provided everything else is perfect like new outer wheels installed and in the correct orientation etc... Plus ALL calibrations that can be done through the service menu have been done. You may want to check...
  7. Illustrator Cutline Issues

Make a circle with no stroke. Color it. Make a concentric circle to get what ever finished ring width you want and make it a different color. Use the alignment tools to make sure they're aligned perfectly, one of top of the other. Use the Minus Front command to "cut" the center circle out. Now...
  8. Strange Roland Test Print

I had a similar issue caused by 3rd party inks. The tab that signifies when the cart is empty wouldn't come out. This lead to the cartridge going bone dry then sucking ink back from the other channel.
  9. printing on vinyl backing paper/liner

I'd try it with an aqueous printer. Lots of cheap wide format HP stuff out there. Would need a take up reel though.
  10. Apprentice Handbook?

Lots of trade schools around. They're called technical colleges now. The one I went to can teach you carpentry, woodworking, machining, welding, and many others including how to be a millwright. Graphic design, typography, layout, it all gets taught. Trades are a huge part of the college...
  11. Cutting Mat & Grommet Machine

It's been so long I don't remeber where the grid came from. FWIW A few minutes spent with a straightedge and sharpie making lines on your work table will get you there. There's a money saving tip! I use the grid as a reference when hemming banners or a rough check for straight cuts on...
  12. Apprentice Handbook?

IMO it's best to learn by doing. Especially when it comes to anything that involves physical work. Before I'd do anything in the way of training make sure they show up for work on time every day, don't leave early, aren't texting etc... Plus most folks the attention span of a gnat. Reading...
  13. Table project with vinyl printed

Will they be changed out or permanent? If permanent I'd lay down the print and cover with a flow coat of epoxy.
  14. Pros and cons

Buy something else. Not knocking the DC5, but it is not the right tool for the job. Many moons ago we had a SignArt thermal printer. We used it to produce various size full color decals, labels etc... No wraps, no 4x8's etc... IMO thermal printers should be used to do things you can't do...
  15. Cut & Drop Reconsidered - new vans

Some crafty bugger will invent some type of filler on a roll for that. Million dollar idea right there.
  16. Credit Card Processing WTF?

I wonder how Apple Pay will impact purveyors of credit card services? Although only users of iPhone 6 will have the capability I'm sure the technology will spread.
  17. Need help _ real estate post making

I used to do them with a router template, guide bushing and 1/2" bit in my plunge router. Now I have a radial arm saw and can dado the half lap. Only thing with the router is you will have to do some math to make an accurate template. You need to compensate for the bushing offset. Big...
  18. SP540V won't print black

Could be a bad ribbon cable. Or maybe it's just loose with all the work you've been doing.
  19. What Upcoming Print Technologies Are You Interested In?

In the realm of flatbeds I'd like to see one that runs as consistently and reliably as my Roland SP540V. Nothing but a constant barrage of folks posting with this issue or that regarding their flatbed regardless of manufacturer. Banding, drop outs, head crashes, etc...REALLY!!!!! And as if...
